Toenail surgery and Onyfix treatment in Geelong
At Total Care Podiatry, we offer effective, evidence-based solutions for painful or problematic toenails. Our clinic in Geelong provides both traditional toenail surgery and innovative Onyfix nail correction to treat ingrown, curved, or thickened nails with precision and care.
If you’ve been struggling with recurring nail issues, our podiatrists are here to help with a personalised treatment plan tailored to your needs.
When is ingrown toenail surgery needed?
Chronic or infected ingrown toenails often don’t resolve with basic home care. In such cases, ingrown toenail surgery may be the most effective way to eliminate the issue and prevent recurrence.
Our procedure, known as a partial nail avulsion (PNA), involves:
- Local anaesthetic for complete comfort
- Removal of the problematic nail edge
- Optional application of a chemical (phenol) to prevent regrowth
- Minimal downtime and high success rate
Toenail surgery is performed in our clinic under sterile conditions and typically takes less than an hour. Most patients return to normal activity within a few days.
Onyfix nail correction
We also offer Onyfix nail correction, a gentle, pain-free solution for involuted or curved nails that aren’t infected but cause discomfort. Onyfix uses a specialised resin strip, applied to the nail plate, which guides the nail into a healthier, flatter shape as it grows.
Onyfix nail correction is:
- Completely non-invasive
- Suitable for children and adults
- Safe for diabetics
- Pain-free with no anaesthetic required
This is an excellent alternative for those not suited to or wanting to avoid ingrown toenail surgery.
Our Podiatrists at Total Care Podiatry have all completed their Onyfix nail correction training. They can apply the treatment during your appointment, and the whole process is pain-free. The procedure has been performed successfully in Germany for 3 years, and now Total Care Podiatry is bringing Onyfix to Geelong.
An initial assessment appointment will be required to assess your suitability for Onyfix. Photos and measurements will be taken at this appointment, and your podiatrist will advise you of the procedure and costs involved.

FAQs about nail surgery and Onyfix
Does toenail surgery hurt?
The procedure is done under local anaesthetic so that you won’t feel pain during surgery. Mild soreness afterwards is usually manageable with paracetamol.
How long does recovery take after nail surgery?
Most people can return to normal shoes and light activity within 1–3 days. Full healing can take 2–4 weeks.
How does Onyfix work?
Our Podiatrist will adhere the Onyfix resin to the base of your toenail, which will then be cured to the nail using an LED blue light lamp. Once the product has adhered to the nail, it gently lifts the edges of the nail, making the edges flatten out and decreasing the curvature of the nail. This will then stay in place until the nail has grown out (this can take up to 12 months, depending on the growth rate of the nail). There are no restrictions to your activities post treatment; you can swim, exercise, and wear your usual footwear without any risk of damaging the product or decreasing its effectiveness.
What are the benefits of Onyfix?
The Onyfix system is a less invasive and painless alternative to toenail surgery. It may not be suitable in all cases, but your podiatrist will assess your suitability and advise whether the Onyfix product will be effective in your situation.
